Violent Games Not Welcome in Germany?
Legislation aims to ban shooters, gamers not pleased.
Two weeks ago, we reported Crytek, the developers behind the upcoming Crysis, would leave Germany if the country banned shooters. It looks like Germany might be heading that way, as bill new legislation unveiled to do just that. The legislation will not only affect retailers, but players could be looking at a year in prison just for playing a banned game.
"We have among the most drastic censorship rules for games," said Frank Sliwka, head of the Deutsche E-Sport Bund, an umbrella federation for online gaming teams to The Financial Times. "Now we are being labelled as a breeding ground for unstable, dysfunctional and violent youngsters.
The bill is scheduled to go in front of Germany's national parliament in 2007, and we'll be following its progress through the proper channels. Good luck to our German gamers!
