Nintendo Wii will launch in Europe on December 8th 2006 and cost EUR 249 / GBP 179, Nintendo announced during a conference in London this afternoon.
The bundle will be the same as in America, with one Wii remote, one Nunchuk and a copy of Wii Sports included.
Wii Play (the mini-games package that includes a bundled Wii remote) and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will both be there at launch from Nintendo, to be followed shortly after by WarioWare: Smooth Moves.
Nintendo predicts around 15 to 20 games at the European launch, mostly from third-parties, with Red Steel, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Need For Speed: Carbon, Cars, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz all set for launch.
Games will retail for between EUR 49 and 59 (GBP 34 and 39). Accessories will also be available - Wii remotes will cost EUR 39 / GBP 29, Nunchuks will cost EUR 19 / GBP 14, and the Classic Controller will cost EUR 19 / GBP 14.
Virtual Console will also be available, offering 15 titles during the European launch period, with 5-10 titles added each month thereafter from previous Nintendo consoles along with SEGA systems and TurboGrafx.
Virtual Console games that appeared on-screen included Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong. Exact pricing of VC titles was not discussed during the conference.
What we did get was Satoru Iwata delivering the same sort of demonstration of Wii Channels that America and Japan enjoyed yesterday, along with a Wii Sports tennis demonstration involving British tennis players Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.
A photo-call, interviews with key Nintendo staff and gameplay sessions follow the conference. More soon.

Wii points costs for Europe
Nintendo UK has confirmed the pricing for Wii points - the magical currency that will buy you Virtual Console games through Wii's shopping channel.
In Europe, it turns out, 2000 Wii points will cost you EUR 20 or GBP 14, and you can expect to be able to buy them on cards through retailers, and using your credit card online.
Games will cost the same amount of points worldwide - 500 points for NES games, 800 points for Super Nintendo games, and 1000 for Nintendo 64 - and apparently other titles (SEGA, TurboGrafx) will be decided soon.
However the cost of the cards will vary. In the US, 2000 Wii points will cost US$ 20.

Here some stuff i found abt the Wii and all the "Next Gen" Consoles :)
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/2458/nintendowiiboxvq1.png
The Wii Hardware
- Nintendo Wii’s ‘Broadway’ CPU operates at 729MHZ with a maximum bandwith of 1.9gbyte/sec.
- Nintendo Wii’s ‘HollyWood’ GPU is clocked at 243MHZ, the internal memory of it includes 3mb of embedded graphics memory and 24megabytes of high speed main memory.
- 64megabytes of GDDR3 (MEM2) as the external main memory. Just like the internal memory, it can be accessed from the CPU and GPU with a maximum bandwidth of 4gbytes/sec and can also store programs in the MEM2.
- The GPU of the Wii is identical to the GC’s but it is on average 1.5X faster.
Wii’s Optical Disc Drive
- Opitcal Disc Drive (ODD) supports single and dual layer Wii disks, discs eject with software or button and the maximum read speed is the equivalent of DVDx6.
- Two main disc types supported the single sided 12cm single sided 4.7gb and the double sided 8.51 GB. Nintendo GC discs also supported. Some of the capacity of the discs are used by the system and games can not use full disc space.
- Inserting a disc will start the Wii console, even if it was already in an off state. Pressing the eject button will change the console to an on state to take out the disc also.
General Overview
- An optional wired LAN adapter that connects to a USB port is in the pipeline for users who do not possess a wireless LAN set-up currently.
- Internal non-removable 512MB flash memory used to storage game save data and downloadable content thus eliminating the Need for a memory card.
- Both Wii discs and Gamecube discs can be played via an intelligent mode swap. When running in GC mode, the Wii’s CPU and GPU will lower to the respective speeds of the GC and some of the MEM2 functions as ARAM.
- Software development environment is an upgrade to the ‘Dolphin SDK’ used with the GC; the same libraries are used so developers can get up to scratch easily as well as the possibility of ports being easier.
- The following interfaces are included with the Wii; SD card slot, Wireless controller, two USB 2.0 ports, wireless LAN, 4x GC controller ports, 2x GC memory card slots and an AV multi output jack (only an analog jack).
- Supports Wii disks (one sided 12cm) and GC discs (one sided 8cm) and console auto switches depends on what disk is inserted
- More than just the Nunchaku is planned as an extension. GC peripherals such as DK bongos can be used in both Wii and GC modes.
- Three power status, on, off and unplugged. To prevent mistaken turn offs, the power button must be held for about a second.
The Wii Control System
- The Wii controller features; Direct Pointing Device, Three axis accelerometer, Wii power button (remotely turn console on/off), buttons, wireless connectivity, indicator LED’s, rumble, battery powered (two AA alkaline batteries) and ability to connect extension unit.
- The Wii controller supports three types of operations; by itself, with a nunchuk extension or with a classic controller. Classic controllers will ship to developers during August 2006.
- The SYNCHRO button on the Wii controller exchanges wireless ID numbers when pressed at the same time as SYNCRHO on the Wii console. Wireless communications are only possible with consoles which have been authenticated.
- The rumble motor can be turned on and off and the intensity can be changed.
- The Wii remote has a pointer for fine movements as well as a motion sensor +/- 3.4G suitable for larger body movements, the nunchuk attachment has a sensor of +/- 2G
- The sensor bar must be placed above or below a TV set, the pointer measures coordinates between the ends of the bar which are about 20cm apart.
- The Wii remote has four status, disconnected, communicating, establishing connection and pairing wait status.
- The pointer can measure co-ordinates within bounds of rectangle centered upon the sensor bar, thus it can also measure points beyond the screen. It also responds to strong light sources, windows, fluorescent lamps, fireplaces, mirrors etc.
- Due to players hands shaking while holding the controller, a ring buffer allows a precise direction to be created to hold and average accelerator samples.

Looks like Nintendo thinks everyone got Wlan at home. And 64MB Ram is not that much. I now think Sony will loose the battle cuz Microsoft got better strategy with real next gen consoles. Wii got nice innovations and i will definitly buy one on 8th december! Sony stole nintendos ideas cuz they are too stupid to design a new controller. And now they dont have any rumble function. Sad sony very sad...
Sorry for my postings but looks way better than using one post for all the news. ;)

Nice and neat :)
I'm not a great fan of the remote control "Nunchuk". Batteries I would imagine take a fair battering from use. Would be interesting to know an average of how long they expect to last.
Console's have never needed much memory. Look at the N64 coming with 4Mb!

i remember it needing an extension to 8MB for perfect dark.... more memory = a good thing. or did it upgrade to 4mb i dont remember. anyone clarify?

Take a look at this movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpWntkuU0OU). Its fishing in Twilight Princess looks funny with Nunchuk controller. And if you dont have any batterys you are still able to use your gamecube controller. Think abt the build in memory functions, you are able to carry your charakters and saves with you in the controller. Thats another nice idea =)

Sunlight disables Wii sensor bar?
Posted Oct 9th 2006 3:19PM by Paul Miller[/URL]
It's hard to think of that cute little Wii box harboring vampiric tendencies, but beyond its Nintendo-confirmed aversion to halogen lights, the Wii sensor bar apparently can't handle your garden variety sunlight either. This little "quirk" was discovered by OMBRENOIR17, an official Warpstar Knight over at the Nintendo NSider Forums, who experienced an hour of downtime at a recent Wii demonstration at Nintendo World when the Sun hit the showroom and shrouded the display units in light. According to trusty ol' Wikipedia, "sunlight" is apparently quite commonly encountered by the Earth's surface dwellers, and might even pose a problem to the console's casual target market, but we don't foresee it posing much of a threat to Engadget HQ bunkers. Threat averted.

[U]Wii Remote: An in-depth analysis
'We can imagine what a challenge it has been for developers to make games for this controller, but when done properly, we're already certain that this controller offers the functionality to produce totally unique and absorbing game experiences.
The Nunchuk expansion is far lighter than Wii Remote - which is expected because it lacks a force-feedback motor and doesn't need a battery pack as it draws it's power from the remote. The analogue stick feels nice, with just the right amount of resistance, and an adequate level of grip from the smooth rubber surface on its top, and its accelerometer functions are every bit as responsive as the remote.'

Wii will have an updatable Linux OS
There’s bits and pieces of information floating around that revolve around Iwata Asks (http://wii.nintendo.com/iwata_asks_vol1_p3.html) interviews on Nintendo’s website. What I found interesting was the tidbit about the updatable operating system: ‘Wii is the first system from Nintendo that we can continue to be involved in (via operating system updates) after the customer buys it. This means that Wii will greatly expand and diversify the ways in which people will enjoy games in the future.’ The Wii is reported to operate on top of a proprietary form of the Linux kernel, although there are already efforts to make a GNU/Linux (http://www.wii-linux.com/) for the console. So, the answer to the age old question is that it already runs Linux.
Source (http://www.multiplayer.ro/2006/10/09/wii-will-have-an-updatable-linux-os.html) (Thats interesting. But hard to chip the Wii if your are able to update the OS.)

Sony Australia spills its thoughts on Nintendo
10 Oct 2006 - We've heard Microsoft's thoughts many a time, but what does Sony's crew down-under think of Nintendo's radical console?
Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, recently spoke with Australian newspaper, The Age, discussing his company's plans for the PlayStation brand this Christmas, and, more interestingly, how Nintendo will affect what's in-store.
When asked about Nintendo's goal of attracting the mass market - something that Sony has achieved with impressive results - Ephraim said, "Nintendo is a great company as far as games development goes, they have been around for a long time, they know how to deliver an entertaining product. My only question for this Christmas on Wii is the price point. Even though it's affordable, at $400 plus whatever you need to buy accessories-wise, I'm guessing you need to spend about $500 to take home a Wii and enjoy it," he said
While playing may equal believing, Ephraim has yet to experience Nintendo's revolutionary system, but said, "I've heard good things about it. For this Christmas, I think that price point is still not family entertainment because $500 is a lot to fork out, but we welcome the Nintendo heritage of gaming where they can appeal to a broader audience because long-term that is critical for the industry."
"What we've done on PlayStation 2 with social gaming has broadened the audience and we're glad that [Nintendo is] attempting to do similar things to open up the market to families and never-before gamers. Time will tell. For this Christmas I think the price for what it specifically does as a video games machine is a bit pricey," said Ephraim, continuing by believing that it's a long term plan, for which Sony has "great respect for."
Ephraim also shared his thoughts on the handheld scene, and specifically the success of the Nintendo DS compared with the PSP. "The DS really appeals to a lot younger, very female skewed [audience], and the DS has done a fabulous job," he said. "PSP is a product that if you go back to the analogy of PlayStation and PlayStation 2, they are leaders in their field as far as the consumer offering. Price points, perceptions, or consumers coming to grips with what the device truly offers and the value that it offers, does take time."
Nintendo's Wii hits Australian shores in just over 57 days, while people wanting Sony's PlayStation 3 will have to wait until March 2007, at the earliest, when the system is expected to debut for around a 'grand'.

Sorry just found this one and decided to use a new Post for this news. Sony should start thinking abt their prices. You need ~599 Euros to buy a PS3. You will get an old Contoller. A Console which is as powerfull as a Xbox360 for arround 350 Euros. A new 1080p Console and i know anyone of you got a nice 'HDTV Ready' TV at home for ~ 1500 Euros...
If you decide to buy the Wii you will get a Console for 250 Euros and a lot of fun with that new Controller Concept (read more abt it above) :P Okay /me starts to blame the PS3. And i always thought it will be best Console ever.

Nintendo Responds to Wii vs. The Sun Issues (Round 2)
Company says "no great risk" for light interference.
No one has their hands on a Wii yet, so it's been difficult to understand the potential pitfalls of Nintendo's sensor bar and Wiimote in Nintendo's controlled environments. Earlier this week, bloggers picked up on comments from a Nintendo.com message board user (http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=revolution&message.id=2065592) who visited a Nintendo World event in New York City a few weeks ago, and said several units had to be shut down because the streaming light made the games unplayable. Here's their description of the incident:We know that the sensor bar goes all wonky when halogen lights are in the room. But did you know that natural sunlight messes it up too? That's right, if you have the sun beaming right onto the sensor bar, it doesn't work. For about an hour or so, the sun shone right into the store, the two MP3:C kiosks had to have curtains above them, and the Wii Sports Tennis and Shooting Game kiosks were unplayable since they were "shrouded" in sunlight. Later the sun went behind a building, and everything was in working order again. So when you get your Wii, don't play it in the sunlight. Or keep the sensor bar and TV away from the windows. This isn't too surprising, so 1UP thought to ask Nintendo to address the situation, a question they mostly dodged. "Our testing thus far shows no great risk of light interference when playing a game that relies on the pointer and sensor bar," said a company representative.
We won't know for sure until Wii units start rolling into press rooms, but you can be sure 1UP will be putting the hardware through its paces, so stay tuned.

North America: GameStop Wii Pre-orders Begin Oct. 13
Retailer GameStop confirmed to The Wiire today that Wii pre-orders for North America will begin Friday, October 13.
While Wii games have been available for pre-order for a few weeks now, Friday will mark the first time GameStop has opened up pre-orders on the hardware. In order to make a pre-order, gamers will need to go to a local GameStop or EB Games and ask to put down a set amount of money (between $25 and $50) on a Wii. The money placed on a pre-order goes towards the final price of the product.
North America is expected to receive approximately two million Wii units by the end of 2006, with half of that shipment expected at launch, though recent reports of expectation-exceeding Wii production may cause those numbers to change.
The Wiire could not confirm the pre-order status of GameStop/EB stores in territories outside North America, nor of other retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart and Toys 'R Us.
GameStop, which recently merged with EB Games, is a specialty video game retailer, but also sells accessories, movies, action figures and playing cards.
Stay with The Wiire for all the latest.

Are there any differences between the GameCube version and the Wii version?
In terms of gameplay and features, no. Both titles have the same storyline and gameplay features, the major difference being the Wii's use of motion sensitivity and interaction.
Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed in an interview that the only differences between the GameCube and Wii versions of the Twilight Princess are technical.
and
Nintendo has gone on record stating that the GameCube and Wii versions of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would be the same, with the only differences being the control system, and the widescreen/progressive scan support on the Wii version.

Does this mean the graphics are the same? Seem's I should just get the GC version so far and save myself £170 in the process.

From what I heard, the GC and Wii versions are the same game, but with added features for the Wii, including 480p support.

Take a look at the remote. There are diffrent colours. Maybe they gonna release the Wii also in different colours. That LightGun Adapter looks cool. But didnt read any prices of that yet :/

Awesome styling, but the classic controller doesn't look very comfortable. I'd rather have it shaped like modern controllers.
