View Full Version : [Project] Gaycube ;)

I started a modding project with a friend of mine. We wanna try to pimp a Gamecube :)

.: History :.
We got bored on our holiday so we asked a friend what shes doing this evening. She said hm watching some DVDs. So we asked her if we're allowed to do a DVD Night at hers. She said 'ok' great idea! So we went to her that evening and she told us that she borrowed a Gamecube. Instead of watching DVD we played Gamecube for severall hours. All the Party Games. Was great fun. Next evening in the Pub we talked abt Consoles. So we thought abt buying a Gamecube and pimp it. Hey its easy to pimp a PS2 or a Xbox cuz both consoles are like a little PC. But the Cube is different. We just wanna have a custom unique Gamecube.

These are the parts i already ordered:

1 - Gamecube Pearl White with 1 Controller and Memorycard [70,99 Euros]
50 - LEDs blue 5mm 7000mcd with Resistors [7 Euros]
1 - Qoob Pro Modchip [46 Euros]
1 - Gamecube Crystal Case (for normal DVDs) [25 Euros]
1 - Gamecube Memory Card 64MB [10 Euros]
1 - A new Logo for the top. A Playboy Bunny on Perspex. [6 Euros]
1 - A new Logo for the top. A Girl on Perspex. [6 Euros]

The Parts i still have to order:

10 - pink LEDs 3mm 1200mcd with Resistors [10 Euros]
1 - BBA Broad Band Adapter <-- If you know someone who dont need his BBA and wanna give it to a poor man or gonna sell his for some bucks pls PM me :) [A new one for 35 - 40 Euros]

.: The Plans :.
We wanna replace the Case to a crystal one to be able to play normal DVDs and so we get a better look if we install some blue LEDs. We think abt replacing the original Logo on the top with one out of Perspex so we can light it with pink LEDs to give it a gay look. Then we wanna install the qoob pro chip to be able to play mp3 DVDs and other legal stuff.

I thought abt replacing the Fan with some of those nice LED modding fans.

Do you have any ideas how to pimp the Cube? Tell Me! ;)

i think there are some ppl who changed the Power Led. And some using a Case for normal dvds. The big question is "Uhm where to get the power for some more LEDs" And i dont know the answer yet. I need the cube and my multimeter to check that =)

i doubt you will have a problem powering them as leds use very little energy hense the reason they can last days or weeks off a single AA battery

The 64 MB Memory Card *yay*

http://web34.zip-zap.de/5.jpg

The Crystal Case which looks uber awsome!
AAAAAnnnnd last but not least:

Ok. Now we gonna continue the story...

The package with the cube arrived on Friday. Here we go with the Pics:

http://web34.zip-zap.de/7.jpg

The Original Box. Looked a bit fecked up. But all was inside and new. The Guy who sold it just took the Game. But thats okay cuz i only bought the cube.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/8.jpg

All the Stuff out of the Pack

http://web34.zip-zap.de/9.jpg

The Gamecube in Pearl White. Looks very nice tbh.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/10.jpg

Do i have to say more than awsome? ;)

http://web34.zip-zap.de/11.jpg

Have to take those Pics cuz i like the Colour. Shame i wanna replace the case ;p

http://web34.zip-zap.de/12.jpg

Okay thats the last one!

maDDin
7th May 2006, 23:14
On saturday i decided to fit in the chip. So i drove to my Office and started to open the Cube:

http://web34.zip-zap.de/13.jpg

Thats the Gamecube with missing top.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/14.jpg

A little bit closer ;)

http://web34.zip-zap.de/15.jpg

That are all the parts i removed till now. The laser and fan unit. The contoller ports.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/16.jpg

Thats the gamecube mainboard with passive cooler on. So small and cute.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/17.jpg

Mainboard from back.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/18.jpg

And from top. After removing the cooler you are able to see the processor (that ibm thingy). The graphics processor is under that heatsink creme and i think those little things on top are the rams.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/19.jpg

Mainboard after soldering the Qoobchip cables.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/20.jpg

Thats the Chip after i fit it into the Case.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/21.jpg

Okay finished to build in the Chip. And the Hardware is sitting into the new Crystal Case.

After i tested all the Cube didnt start. Only black screen and nothing happened. I unplugged the qoob chip and it worked. So i thought something went wrong while i soldered the cables on the mainboard. So i went to my office again. Asked a friend to solder it again. Tested the Cube... hm still black screen.

maDDin
7th May 2006, 23:14
We played normal Cube then till 4 am and went to bed. Next day after i arrived at my friends again he told me that the Cube is running fine with qoob chip. He told me he just let the Cables run other ways. And now its working.
So here are the Pics ;)

http://web34.zip-zap.de/22.jpg

Thats the green status LED which indicates that the qoobchip is running fine (i love that light) ^^

http://web34.zip-zap.de/23.jpg

A normal DVD in the gamecube drive. Looks Odd ^^

http://web34.zip-zap.de/24.jpg

The Cube is playing mp3s. Shame that dont look any good. A bit boring but hey its playing mp3s thats all i want :D

http://web34.zip-zap.de/25.jpg

And its emulating SNES, MAME, GBA, NES, Sega Genesis, Scumm and N64 Roms. Just played some levels Super Mario World on Gamecube ;p

http://web34.zip-zap.de/26.jpg

A Cube with working Qoob chip into my room. You see the power LED looks cool through the Case.

http://web34.zip-zap.de/27.jpg

I just turned off the lights...

http://web34.zip-zap.de/28.jpg

A new Qoob Background. A friend of mine made that. Looks very cool.

Now i have to w8 for the logos to arrive... ;)

SK
7th May 2006, 23:24
Nice! How well does it emulate? Looks quite good from the SMB screeny.

maDDin
8th May 2006, 08:24
It emulates all SNES Roms. Didnt try others yet. You just have to convert the rom files to .dol then burn it on DVD and put it into the cube. Your able to browse the dvd then and start every .dol file :) Gonna try the other systems soon.

Wohoo a new picture. Ordered the pink LEDs today! Sry no update the last time. Was on vacation in munich. I moved into another room of our house. Got some trouble with a friend of mine. The Reason is a girl... i think you know what i mean ;)

But i got my BBA now. And i installed it. I flashed software on the cube to stream games over the BBA. Its working fine now iam able to Backup original Gamecube games. Looks funny the litte Programm is using a normal IP Adress. I set it to 192.168.0.30 . You have to put the Game into the cube and start it. Then boot the programm and type http://192.168.0.30/backup.iso into your Internet Explorer and its starting to download the Iso directly of the cube. Very nice. I took a screenshot of the download.

Okay finished the cube over the weekend. Got my pink LEDs and soldered em into the top. Then i replaced the big blue cables with little red ones and soldered new blue LEDs into the Front. 3 blue LEDs on each site on bottom. 3 blue LEDs on each site on top. 4 Blue LEDs on front to light up the litte holes over the controler ports. Then 4 pink LEDs to light up the Controller Port itself. And 4 pink LEDs to light up the Bunny Logo on top. I fit in a little switch. Now iam able to turn the Lights on and off. I burned my handy arround 20+ times :s but iam way happy now. Just the Qoob chip is annoying. Wont get the 5V without problems.

I dont care as long as no girl thinks that :p

Total Bordom and too much money forced me to buy a broken gamecube on eBay. Spend 20 Euros and just the open switch is messed nothing more. The Cube arrived and i tested it, every game is running fine.

I ordered 50 blue 3mm, 50 red 3mm and 10 Raibow LEDs 5mm. The Rainbow LEDs are able to change the colour, that looks awsome. I decided to use my old white Case for the Cube Hardware and i've already ordered a Xeno Chip. That chip is not a replacement Bios its just patching the Drive. You are not able to install homebrew software. If you wanna use homebrew you have to boot them from DVD. Here are some Pics:

The used cube, its a little bit dirty. Have to clean it then i change the case.

The LEDs.

Looks like hard work ;) Exactly 100 LEDs.

The mini blank DVDs with Ritek04 Mediacode.

The DVDs are so cute :)

Now i have to wait for the Chip and i have to buy some cables but iam too lazy to drive to the eletronicstore and buy em. And i dont have any time to mod the cube at the moment. But i will update this if i got some news :)

To play backups :s

SK

This needs to be soldered in I guess?

maDDin
1st November 2006, 14:38
Yeah every gamecube chip need to be soldered in. But its not that hard only 6 wires. I gonna post my xeno experience here if i soldered the chip in.

DuoQ is the cheapest GC Chip but they just copied the Xeno Bios. The DuoQ seems to be buggy sometimes. So i decided to buy the Xeno for abt 19 Euros.

But soldering is not all. On some GC Drives you have to change the Laser Resistor Value. It's set too high on some cubes so they wont be able to read backups. You have to lower it down and check if its working. And you have to use blank DVDs with Ritek mediacode. Ritek04 for mini dvds and Ritek 05 for normal sized one.
