Not that I was going to buy it but it seems that the PC version of Halo 2 will only run on computers which have the new Windows Vista installed.
Seems a bit daft to me but I guess it's to get people to install Vista. I don't see any other reason, I can't see why it wouldn't run on Windows Xp. etc.
Anyway,

Awww Microsh!t got another 'nice' idea! 1st they started to show us nice Halo screenshots and Movies and then it is a Releasegame of the old Xbox and it was Xbox only the 1st few years. Then after the graphic got old and they recognized that they cant really sell it on Xbox anymore they released it for PC. The Graphic was old but u need the best Hardware. And now it looks like they decided to release Halo2 on Vista only. Bill you know how to annoy customers and i know why iam using Ubuntu at my office ^^

I came to the same conclusion, but even so I bet they could make it run on DirectX 9 or at least let XP users upgrade their DX to version 10. This is purly a sales thing. I don't understand why though, Vista is going to be a big when it comes out, it doesnt need any promotion.

I agree. I've never bought an OS as a software purchase (only as a combined payment for a new PC) but I think Vista might be the first. Depends what other h/w is out by then really as if theres decent stuff out thats compatible with my current pc then I will u/g it. I am hoping for a combined gfx/ppu card by the end of the year but it may not be compatible with my current setup which is AGP and not PCI-Express. If that's the case, I may well opt for a totally new PC with all the bells & whistles already included i.e. the new gfx card, vista etc.

Bit of an update;
The game will not use DirectX 10, so you won't need the latest video card to play it. However, you will most definitely need Windows Vista, because Halo 2 will only run on Windows Vista PCs. According to Clowes, that's because the game takes advantage of many Vista-only features, such as rapid install. When you first insert the Halo 2 disc into your PC, you won't have to install the game like you traditionally would a PC game. Instead, like a console game, Halo 2 will begin to load up and you can play immediately while it installs in the background.
Jeez thats nice. Surly though the game require most of your system resources to run the game rather than do two tasks. Possibly optimized for dual core CPU's?
I installed Vista on Saturday again. I removed it and went back to XP before since a piece of software wasn't working. ATI need to work on their Vista drivers, they certainly don't seem as quick as the XP ones.
Other than wanting to get to know the OS, since I will be using it for the next few years for work, I wouldn't bother with it. It looks nice but at the moment I guess the full advantages won't be known to me until the next version of Server comes out.

There's an unofficial "patch" to get Halo 2 working on XP. Didn't take too long.
