View Full Version : Need a new gfx card!

SK

Must have only had this GF4 TI4200 just over a year and its already dead. Now looking for the next one to replace it but havent been following the hardware scene for a while. Whats hot atm, ATI still above Nvidia or have Nvidia come back on top again?

Im really only wanting to spend about £120.

Suggestions?

Any good?

I prefer G-force ... those cards have way better support... but sometimes ati just is a tad better. The choice is up to you, my friend!

SK look here:

Benchmarked 80 gfx cards (http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/over2003/?26452#p3)

They benchmarked 80 GFX Cards! Then u know which gfx card is good.

TBH, there isn't really much in it nowdays between ATI and Nvidia, ATI have come along in leaps and bounds with their driver support compared to how they used to be. I find benchmarks to be much of a muchness, all they tell you is that 1 card works better with 1 piece of software and another card works better with a different piece of software. Personally i prefer Nvidia chipset cards but that's just me.

Here's a list of links i'd choose from:

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5359&GroupID=334

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5341&GroupID=334

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5756&GroupID=342

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5755&GroupID=342

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5323&GroupID=342

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=5909&GroupID=342

Personally this is the one i'd go for:

http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=3970&GroupID=338

The (LE) just means it's not bundled with games.

Take a look and see what you think.

Just nicked the GF2 MX out the SC Server. Will do to play HalfLife at least. I was geared towards the 9600 Pro but looking at that benchmark page and then the prices of some cards I can get a 5900 for pretty much the same money. Now to wait for some money :(

Right Im not 100% sure but its either the Motherboard or the CPU thats playing up. Im typing this from the machine now though.
I installed the old card but still nothing. Ive took out and reseated the memory and managed to get the bios up at least but then it froze. Now ive removed the battery to reset the bios and here I am.

The mobo has an LED on it to tell you what its doing, so if it stops on a certain letter you know where to look. Its stopping on C1 which is memory.

Ill continue to play, least I can put the gfx card off for a bit, hope what ever is wrong is going to be cheaper.

Spoke too soon, its died again. Dead mobo or CPU me thinks

Pro]v[etheus

Could be the PSU, might be worth putting your 'spare' in there and see if that works.

Vorm
29th March 2004, 19:03
yep - I thought my mobo or cpu was fried - turned out to be the psu !!

worth trying just in case

SK
29th March 2004, 19:29
Would mean buying a new one to find out. I brought the current one to replace the one that came with the case as it wasnt powerful enough to run the AMD.

Im looking at getting a new mobo and cpu and hopefully keep the 2700 memory.

This one WILL be Intel CPU.

Will be glad to get rid of the jet engine. Although I will miss it keeping my office warm when the heating goes off at night.

SK

100% sure I will be.

Ive just ordered another PSU, I hope its that as I really dont have the cash to be buying expensive parts.

Did u buy one of the Q-Tec Gold range PSUs ? Good value imho, i have 2 and they run 24/7

SK
2nd April 2004, 21:09
Thats what im currently running, never any issues before thats why ive orderd another one. Like I said to Furries, the price difference between a recommended and a Q-Tec is £50.

Ive got the Q-Tec on order set to arrive on Thursday next week. £20.

Pro]v[etheus

They're a great PSU, dual fan and very quiet. TBH when i got my 1st 1 i was dubious about how long it would last, well the 1st 1 has been going 24/7 for over a year and a half now and the 2nd 24/7 for the past 5 months. I'd recommend the Q-Tec Gold PSU range to anyone.

Ive just got myself a G-Force Fx 5200 .. its not bad for £20 :P better than my old G-Force 4 which used to overheat my processor :P

Naigel
4th April 2004, 12:58
Me too G-Force FX 5200... that thing really sucks. It's one of the most worst cards ever tested. I wish I hadn't bought it, but it was only 90 euros...

Havent read alot of the posts on this thread so i dont know if you have found a card yet but i have a saphire ati 9600 256mb and it works great its a little pricy on retail but i got it from a special place and it was alot cheaper but i live in canada lol so i relly enjoy the card i have and the reason i got it was because of hl 2 when it was comming out for christmas ^^

SK
6th April 2004, 15:14
I dont think its the card. Ive tried another but the same happens. I have a new PSU on its way.

Ahh ok i kinda thaught to my self that a vid card dosent die..... um id diddint read the begining if the thread but if its a problem where the computer wont turn on it might be the power source

SK
6th April 2004, 15:53
Its random at the moment. Sometimes its ok, the rest of the time its dead. I'd say about 90% of the time its dead though.

[rD]Mr.Pink
6th April 2004, 16:00
Power source that definatly souds like a power source problem sometimes they just give out mine did like 2-3 weeks ago its weird cauzse sometimes it dosent turn on and sometimes it dosent you should bring it to a shop dun worry they arent expencive 50 dollars and 20 for putting it in probly cheaper over there ^^

[rD]Mr.Pink
6th April 2004, 16:01
im no expert but your computer wouldnt turn off and have problems turning on if it was a vid card proplem....
