There will be a number of significant Steam events in the coming days.

The first will be a long-awaited Steam client release. The highlights from this release will be:

Offline Play
Account validation (via e-mail)
A new Half-Life 2 hardware survey
Support for purchasing games through Steam

There are a number of other small changes along with the ones listed above, as well as a number of changes planned out past the launch of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.

Offline play, finally!

Since this morning's update was released, the Steam network has been overloaded, causing many Steam users to be unable to login.

Until the Steam content servers are able to catch up with demand, some users will continue to experience slowness or unresponsiveness from the Steam client. We've been making some changes to the content servers today to accelerate this recovery, and we expect conditions to improve quite a bit by tomorrow morning.

Thanks, again, for your patience after this update.

Considering this is such a BIG update to Steam, I suppose a little disruption is to be expected.

I left the house last night at 6:15 with Steam updating at 24%. Hopefully, it will be finished now.

Finally got Steam sorted this morning when the server was quieter, but last night mine dropped twice on the 99% mark.

The Steam forums have been up and down like a yoyo too.

SK
4th March 2004, 16:20
Yeah the forums could do with sorting imo. I havent checked recently though ive been busy with my own network problems here, tends to get to you after a bit when you get 30 odd people wanting to know why they cant get online

This morning at about 8:30 PST, Steam was hit by a distributed denial of service attack. For about two and a half hours, Steam and its games were unavailable to users. We have since fixed the problem, and player numbers have returned to a normal state.

Steam's content servers are still busy with yesterday's update, but for the most part Steam users have been able to get up and running without problems.

The new email validation feature has been causing some users confusion. Our network problems have caused the validation emails to be delivered too slowly -- if you are waiting to receive your automated email response from Steam, please give it some time. We're sorry if this is causing inconvenience; the delivery speed will be improved soon.

Let us know if you're experiencing any other problems.

Mind you, Steam still crashed my computer whilst changing to the next map :naughty:

That's absolutely typical.. Probably some 12 year old l33t h4x0r who's annoyed at 5t34mx0r because they banned him for cheating.

The Off-Line mode is kind of dissappointing though. Not really what you would want.

bumblebee on the Steam forums said:
valve still did not give us what we wanted.

what we wanted: being able to install Steam however we want to (via full installer burned on cdr, via copying someone else's installation), on a totally standalone computer with no connections whatsoever, and being able to update (via patch files), start steam and play without having to connect even once at all. that's offline play.

what valve gave us: install steam however we can (ok), but have to be connected to the internet to be able to update steam (forced), have to log in once to verify your account/cd-key (forced), then you can start steam and play. and if you accidently clicked on exit and logout you have to reconnect to be able to play again.this is not really offline play! it's cached play!

like this, the lan gaming places without an internet connection still cannot run steam, unless they bring their pcs to a connection, log in once, bring it back, and hope some noob doesn't click on exit and logout.

Yes, but have any of you actually tried offline play with more than one person? It doesn't work. It shows everyone's Steam ID as "STEAM_ID_LAN" and if another person tries to join, it says their ID is already in use. GRRRRR!!!

Not "True" Off-Line Play in my opinion. And still we can't have LAN Parties in Steam without a connection to the internet

So I'm not the only one to have been getting that problem. From what I've been discovering it's now impossible to run private games unless you have a dedicated server. Starting a server from the game's menu will automatically launch a LAN game, which gives a "LAN game restricted to local clients" error message whenever someone tries to join remotely.

Valve have excelled themselves again

This release may well help with your LAN issues.

Steam Update Release
March 9, 2004, 6:28 pm · Erik Johnson

There has been a Steam update tonight to address a few problems from last week's release.

This update is for all of the games currently on Steam. The specific changes are:
Changed HTTP download behavior to retry connections using old trickle download method if it can't download all files.
Fixed a crash bug when connecting to a dedicated server with an empty mapcycle.
Fixed a bug where MP3 volume wasn't working properly.
Fixed "STEAM UserID 0:0:1 is already in use on this server" message when connecting to LAN servers in offline mode.
Fixed memory leak in HLTV.

Server admins will want to restart their server to get updated.

There was a crash bug in the release that was planned for this evening.

This update has been rolled back until we address it.

Ah nice one. That http download one sounds interesting. Its the reason I turned it off on the SvenCoop server because of that bug. Will have to try again at some stage.
