View Full Version : Map downloading on the SC Server

Right when downloading maps off the server (if you dont have them installed) you will be disconnected from the server and automatically steam will begin to download the relevant maps from a webserver elsewhere. What advantage is this? Well as we know bandwidth costs money, also with game servers it is essential that there is a constant flow of bandwidth for users to have a decent latency. So all game servers have a setting to cap the upload speed of the server so one person cannot drain too much bandwidth. The fastest ive ever downloaded from a game server is about 8k/s. The SC server here runs at about 6.5k/s which of course are just above 56K modem speeds. Now living in the broadband world we dont want to be reliving this knightmare so Steam have finally come up with the solution of downloading the files elsewhere so you dont disrupt the game server. With a bit of luck you should be downloading at your connections speed limit. Whilst downloading you should see a nice new banner I made in MSPaint :D (when steam release the next update. Amazing really, release a new feature and it doesnt work).

Hm, Nice banner. Really original and unique to the server. Although, I think you should make it a little more detailed, maybe have a text saying "Fight Club - The Banlist" or something. One plain colour just doesn't work these days.
Try making the Banner appear or make the bold text saying 'Banner' link to the actual picture, as it would be a lot easier for people to find it and see it.

OK got sick of this, scraping all of this. Ive found alot of maps try to download files which truly do not exist. Some point to sound files in /ambient/file.wav when its actually /ambience/file.wav. One is trying to find sniper.wav when this doesnt exist anywhere. Ive spent ages renaming all of the Resident Evil folders as the res file points to /revil/ when in fact the correct path is /REvil/ (linux moaning).
I could go on and on but im not going to. Anyone else thinking of using this would be useful feature dont bother! Its most likely ok on mods like DoD CS and TFC where there arnt as many involvement with custom wads, sounds etc.
Had this feature been brought in a lot earlier we wouldnt have this many problems.

It's a shame really, the idea was good and worked at times but i guess it's more hassle than it's worth.

It certainly possible, but you would have to go though every map and make dummy files for the ones that dont exist.

If you decide to give it another try then im more than happy to help get the files sorted.

Think it needs testing fully, I.E client install has 0 maps installed and server changes to each map that it has installed.

Im on 4 weeks leave as of 12:30pm tomorrow so i'm happy to uninstall all maps on my 2nd PC and give it a blast sometime next week.

Well not too bothered, can do if you want, your funeral :)
Were looking for a last minute deal this year so I might be away for a week or so soon.
Right after tonights steam update this has been turned back on. Guess it wasnt only me that had this problem. So now if it cants find a map on the HTTP web server it just downloads it off the server. Which will fail as well but it wont disconnect from the game with an error :)
Have fun!
Hummm dont think my hosting company can quite handle the bandwidth usage this is taking up. Cheap bandwidth with alot of space any recommendations anyone?

SK, can you explain why it always attempts to download de_dust3? Always when I play a map I get for just one second it wants to download it.

Typical, you pay 30£ a month for broadband, then find out you still have to dl at the speed of a 56k.
